An unprotected siege unit is useless in most cases and will be killed before it reaches the enemy base. So make sure to coordinate your attack with your squad/team or move with an ambushing group.
Steambuchet / Tempest These two siege units do not benefit from attribute points and have a fixed health and damage value which is less than the other two siege units. Furthermore, they cannot defend themselves from enemy attacks. the only advantage they have is that they can attack from a distance.
Only use these units if you plan on taking out a heavily fortified base and move with a large group of allies for maximum protection.
Battering Ram / Behemoth These units profit from attribute points and do not necessarily need a lot of protection from other allied players. Use these siege units for quick base ambushes or relatively undefended bases / outposts.
Protecting siege units First of all, the perfect siege protector is the Malphas. If you're playing as one, make sure to protect your siege units instead of running into other skirmishes. If you are not playing as malphas, the best way to protect a siege unit is by distracting the enemy. Let them focus their attacks on you instead of the siege. To accomplish this you'll need to run ahead of the siege units, so you stand in between the siege and the enemy. If that doesn't work (most players will just run past you), try to take out the enemy as quick as possible and try to stun the enemy.
