Attack chains

total_killsUsing different attack combinations in certain situations is crucial to surviving a fight. You have to know that each class in Savage 2 has it's own attack chain and an attack cooldown once the the attack chain is completed. Most units have a chain with 3 attacks. Only Scout and shapeshifter have a chain with 4 attacks. Siege units do not have an attack chain.

Once you complete your attack chain (attacking x times in a row), you cannot attack or block for the duration of the attack chain cooldown.
There is also a small delay between each attack in the chain itself, which is different for each unit. Furthermore, each attack in your chain deals a different amount of damage. Lowest damage starts with your first attack, and the highest damage with your last attack. Now I could post the exact numbers for all units here, but because they are changed with almost every patch you will simply have to get a feel for it. Basically it looks like this:

  • Attack 1 (low damage)
  • Attack 1 cooldown (short duration)
  • Attack 2 (medium damage)
  • Attack 2 cooldown (medium duration)
  • Attack 3 (high damage)
  • Attack chain cooldown (long duration)
The effect of blocking

player_experienceA block move is not only good for blocking incoming melee attacks, it also resets your attack chain instantly. This is very important to know, because the cooldown after your 3rd attack is immense long and you want to avoid using it most of the time. This is probably the biggest mistake new players make: always attacking with their full chain...it leaves you very vulnerable.

Buffs and debuffs

Ekarma_scorevery time you hit your enemy with your melee weapon you will get a brief increase in attack speed. This effect will stack for each successful hit in a row. You will also get your block-meter refilled by a certain amount. Everytime you succesfully block a melee attack the attacker will be slowed in movement and attack speed. So it is important that you attack your enemy as soon as you've blocked 1 or 2 attacks. And of course you have to start blocking if you hit your enemies block too much. Finding the right balance between attacking and blocking is key to win the fight.

"1x Attack + Block" Combo

player_damageplayer_experienceThis is the safest way to approach a single enemy. However, you won't deal much damage if you just keep using this combo. It is best used to break up your opponents block-meter and it works best with the fast attacking units such as Scout and Shapeshifter because they let you repeat this combo extremely fast. However, do not use this combo in a 1vs2+ situation because you're going to lose all your block-meter and thus become very vulnerable because of the stun-effect. This combo should be used only in a 1vs1 situation.

"2x Attack + Block" Combo

player_damageplayer_damageplayer_experienceThis is the most commonly used combo and works very well with all units.
You do medium damage and you have a relatively good chance of blocking your opponents attack.

"3x Attack / Full chain" Combo

player_damageplayer_damageplayer_damageThe full chain attack should only be used on enemies that have their block-meter low, or are low on health. Otherwise you risk of getting slowed down too much, leaving you vulnerable. You should also use this combo against buildings to deal as much damage as possible.

Jump attacks

hps_healedJump attacks are good to fight off a group of enemies as it will push them back quite a bit.  You can also use it to initate the fight or to break someone's block and then finish him off. Jump attacks deal a high amount of damage...if you can pull it off. I do not recommend using this ability in the middle of a fight because it leaves you vulnerable for a short while and it costs you a lot of stamina. And don't even think about using it twice in a row...that's mostly a bad move.

Special abilities

total_deathsMany special attack-abilities such as Acid Spray, Critical Strike or Double Swing will reset your attack chain, just like blocking. You should throw in one of those attacks when the enemy is vulnerable or when you think it will break their block-meter. Use special abilities after your second or third attack for maximum efficency.

Other details
Each attack costs you stamina. Especially jump attacks. So make sure you have a full stamina bar before you get into a fight. When you are low on stamina, your attack and movement speed will be lowered. Attacking an enemy from behind does a bit more damage than from the front. To get behind the enemy during the fight you will have to use your charge. So make sure you have a full charge-meter before getting into a fight. Do not use charge to get to the enemy. You can also use it to run away to use a potion if you're outmatched.

In addition dont run backwards as it slows you down alot, rather turn 90° away
and run sidewise so you eventually hit your opponent.
The "hold down
Shift" technique should be used if your charge meter or block meter runs
out.

You can use special abilities right after hitting your blocking enemy to break
their block, leaving them vulnerable and unable to attack. A good example is
Savage swing and critical strike, the critical strike does not do exceptional
damage but it is enough to break block after you have struck a blocking enemy.

yea u shuld never hold the mous so that your wrist touches a flat
surface. Unless ur hands are huge, try to position ur hand so that it is exactly
over the mouse and not touching any thing else...
lol i suffered this and now
the change helps me turn alot faster...

I disagree, I use a small laptop mouse with the sensitivity turned up fairly
high and my wrists sits on the table and never moves. I use my fingers to do all
my mouse work, but I can see how with a big heavy mouse this would not work.
Taawus  - Claw grip and palm grip.   |62.65.224.xxx |2010-03-23 03:25:35
If you are used to your hand touching the surface, you are likely to be using
claw grip. If you are comfortable with claw grip, up the mouse sensitivity. Claw
grip is mostly used in the RTS genre.
Palm grip means your palm covers the mouse
and you will be using your wrist and arm to move the mouse instead of fingers
and wrist. Low sensitivity is important as the movements are not that
''refined''. If you have a crappy mouse, I recommend using claw grip with high
sensitivity due to rapid movements not registering. I personally use a g500 and
switch styles
