What is "kiting"? Kiting simply means that you are using a ranged weapon in close-combat or just outside of close-combat range.
I thought ranged weapons should not be used in close-combat?
That is the general rule. And as a beginner you should probably stick to that. If you want to make your combat more versatile once you have mastered the combat basics, then you can start learning how to kite.
How exactly does kiting work, and when should I do it?
Unlike "normal" ranged attacks, you want to attack only for a very short duration and then switch back to your melee weapon. Basically you just fire 1 shot (or more if the enemy is not too close) and the switch back to melee. Now once you've done that, you should block immediatly because most players will try to hit you.
Kiting can be risky because if you get hit by a melee weapon while you are using a ranged weapon, you take more damage than usual! That is why you want to do it quick and then block immediatly.
You want to use this technique when your enemy is constantly blocking or when the distance between you and your enemy increases a bit for whatever reason. Also note that kiting will reset your attack chain which allows you to mix up your combos with ranged attacks instead of blocking.
Units that are good at kiting
- Scout (Absolutely the best kiter)
- Predator (very good, can deal lots of damage by kiting, very agile)
- Legionnaire (good kiter, but a bit tricky to handle with the bouncing grenades)
- Builder (he is a bit stiff to use, but it works)
- Conjurer (same as the builder; maybe a bit worse)
- Shapeshifter (not so good, but it kinda works)
